Adobe Photoshop_nbsp;the industry-standard image editor andnbsp;home of the PSD document format_ started life back in the late eighties when PhD student Thomas Knoll was working on his thesis - a work detailing the processing of digital images. This work evolved and in 1987 Thomas proceeded to educe an image-processing program for his Mac.
This application was created to work with greyscale images_ and over a brief time of time Thomas educeed it further_ adding new digital editing processes. It didnt take long precedently his brother John Knoll was intrigued by the program_ dubbed Display.
John_ who was working at George Lucas Industrial Light amp; Magic_ suggested to his brother that they turned Display into a more component-rich fully-fledged image editing program. From here the two worked unitedly_ combining Thomas engineering background with the design experience of his brother.
By 1988 the program had changed dramatically_ with a total host of new components and some name changes_ leading to ImagePro_ then to Photoshop. The Knolls determined to give the project another six months_ complete a beta and try to sell it commercially with the help of the big guns in Silicon Valley.
One company determined to give Photoshop a go_ but it wasnt Adobe. A company named BarneyScan was the leading to take to the brothers software_ deciding to include almost 200 licensed copies of the program with its scanner hardware. Layers made the work of many a photographer and designer easier_ and although Photoshop was not the leading image editing program to present layers_ it most definitely made them a commonplace component for any picturesque software package value its salt.
Despite now being over 20 years old_ some users just havent let go. Back in 2008 a cover of the New Yorker<_em> was created with Photoshop 3.0 - and not for retro-accost_ just owing the illustrator loved rendering 3.0 so much.
Two years behind 3.0 arrived_ its big brother - codenamed Big Electric Cat - hit shelves. Version 4.0 presentd adjustment layers and macros known as Actions. The accession of Actions allowed for the automation of general tasks_ adding anew to the time-saving accost of the Photoshop fruit.
Photoshop 4.0 also saw separate interface changes_ bringing it more in line with other Adobe fruits.
During May_ 1998_ Adobe shipped Photoshop 5.0_ known as Strange Cargo while in educement. With it came such significant components as the Magnetic Lasso_ editable type_ and the History panel.
The History panel allowed the user to undo an action multiple times to extend an earlier state - near stuff!
1999s rendering 5.5 release saw the accession of Save For Web_ a component added specifically to format images for the Web_ resulting in better compression
Codenamed Venus In Furs_ the leading major release of the new millenium was rendering 6.0_ which hit the shelves in September 2000.
Changes and new components presentd in this rendering include different changes to the user interface_ the Liquify strain_ Vector Shape support_ and improvements to layer phraseologys interface_ to name a few.
Adding to the web-friendly components presentd in 5.5_ rendering 6.0 added layer-based slicing - near for web-layout work.
Version 7.0 of Photoshop_ codenamed Liquid Sky_ arrived in 2002.
It was the last major rendering with a numerical-only suffix_ and also the last to run on the classic Mac OS 9. In 2003 Adobe released the Camera RAW plugin for Photoshop 7.0_ adding the power to manipulate digital data from an ever-growing range of cameras.
